* 1 2 3 4 5 6 * * Q W R T * * A G * * Z X C V B These are the keys I use. I use Shift for an extra set of skills, and CTRL to handle any UI stuff that used to be on these keys (i.e. Ctrl + C opens my character menu) I use ESDF for movement, which I'm not sure why it's so unique. I prefer this setup because I can still easily hit the keys on the left, and my index finger actually rests on a home button (so I have that little tab to tell me I'm in the right spot). Similar to the guy with the Star Wars setup, I use this because I have a lot of skills at my keybind disposal, and I can use all of them without discomfort.

The only key that is slightly uncomfortable to reach is 6 / Shift + 6; so I typically bind that to something that is rarely used. Thank goodness I'm not the only one! My UI layout is garbage right now because I haven't spent time working on it. Typically what I'll do is create a hotbar layout similar to a keyboard and my icons in the right spot. The left side is non-shift, the right side is with shift.

The downside is this requires 4 hotbars with one of them (the A-G bar) not being that populated. Typically I'll add non-essential, clickable things on those bars. In FFXIV's case, Raise would be one of those since I cannot use it in combat. Could also put minions, food, etc. So the bar is eventually full.

This doesn't seem to be as necessary for FFXIV as it was in Warcraft though. I really only have like 5 skills I need to use in battle as a mage.

I've got three hotbars for combat skills. My main hotbar is the usual 1 to = but I really only use 1-7 My second hotbar is on the side of my logitech G600 mouse. I use the first 9 for combat stuff and then the bottom 3 buttons are mounts and sprint My third hotbar is F1 through F12 I assigned numpad 1-7 to be for targeting Also, because of my mouse which has 3 mouse buttons (as in left click, right click, and further right click), I can actually tab target with my mouse without any effort whatsoever really. I'm pretty happy with my setup. I use 1-7 for common abilities, 1-3 combo skills, 4-7 alt combo, flash, silence, ae Then I put all defensive abilities on ctl-1-6 And all offensive passive and such, stuns, ranged, fight or flight, etc on alt 1-6 Technically silence should be in my alt bar, since that's where I keep situational utilities, but I can easily hit 1-7 without having to take fingers off of wasd, but when I hit alt + num. It's less comfortable to hit 7 that way.
