First, this is not a trash of RayMarine just my experience with them as it relates to my recent purchase. I purchased a DS500, which is Rays new 'high tech' digital fishfinder. The unit has a beautifully bright LCD screen and their new high definition digital technology.

The L760 includes a full C-Map NT chartplotter and Raytheon’s award winning High Speed Bus (HSB) technology, adding fishfinder capabilities to the 7 and 10 inch HSB radar and Raychart 520/530 products. The L760 can be interfaced with any Pathfinder HSB radar to produce a full color radar at one station, even if that station is in bright sunshine.

I had the first unit for about one week, took it offshore for the first time and in the hot Florida sun the unit fogged up from internal moisture. Also I noticed the unit has several quirky features and one definite bug in the software. Ray replaced the fogged unit with a new one. The first time I took that one offshore, it too fogged up in the sun.

I discussed with the local Ray Rep and their corporate rep's the issue of it fogging and the software bugs. They would not give me a full refund, instead would allow me to upgrade to another unit, the DS600. This unit appears to be sealed better and has more screws holding it together.

Time will tell if it too fogs. The DS600 has the same quirkyness and bugs as the DS500 which are: 1) Unit defaults to all auto mode upon power reset. So you have to dig thru the menus to reset it each time you use it, if you want to operate the unit other than full auto mode.

Not that big of a deal, but I prefer manual range and gain and it is somewwhat of a pain to reset it each time. Ray says this is because the unit is designed to only be operated in auto mode.

2) If you put the unit in manual range mode and set it to zoom the unit does put the proper depth reading on the screen when you manually change the ranges. So basically it is displaying incorrect depth data after you change the range. Ray again says this is because the unit is design to only operate in full Auto mode. Other complaint is (but I should have seen this before I bought it) when in zoom mode, only two numbers are displayed; the very top and very bottom. There are no intermediate readings, so you have to interpolate.

Other manufactures display a series ticks on the screen. Well, just my two cents worth. Steve, I think the DSM module is built-in to the DS Series.

It has the high definition imaging built-in. As to if it really helps, it is still too early for me to say. I have used the unit twice and am still getting use to it. I am use to using a mono CRT type finder and this one displays much more 'stuff' than what I am use to. On the last dive trip, three out of six dives were on sand as either the unit is displaying things that are not there or I just don't know how to use it yet.

That is why I want to use it in manual mode. In auto mode it seems everything it displays is red (max reflection).

I thought this would indicate hard bottom but after diving on sand several times I came to the conclusion that I don't understand the complexities of this unit. Next time I will set the gain on manual and see if I can get a color difference between say, bait fish and hard bottom. Must admit Ray has not been very helpful with their comments about 'just use it in full auto mode'. Again though I don't want to flame Ray when it is probably operator error.
