The Skeleton Driver was a remote-controlled robot capable of driving a monster truck. It's a skeleton wearing a torn driver's outfit, a pair of red gloves and a red helmet with a black diamond.

Like a lot of girls her age, grew up watching ' on TV with her dad in her hometown of Sullivan, Illinois, marveling at the antics of giant trucks like Grave Digger and Max-D. But it wasn’t like she was a couch potato when it came to getting behind the wheel. “I have been on anything with wheels and a motor since I was 3 years old,” said Mahon, one of the drivers of the popular truck Scooby-Doo, from the cartoon series. “I had four-wheelers, dirt bikes, snowmobiles.” In fact, Mahon was a rising star in the world of professional motocross when a serious collision sidelined her for two years. By the time she recovered, she said, the professional women’s series had stalled, so she steered into dirt-track racing.

When she developed a reputation in that scene, a veteran approached her with the idea of becoming a Monster Jam driver. “When you’re big in motor sports,” she noted, “people tend to know your name and where you’re from.” That was 2013. After some training, Mahon became 'Monster Jam'’s rookie of the year in 2015. Keeping pace with her rise in the scene is practically an entire crew of female drivers; Mahon estimates that there were fewer than 10 drivers when she got into the scene four years ago, but the number may have doubled over that period. For Mahon, the move from motocross to dirt-track racing to Monster Truck felt preordained. “I was so engrossed with my motosports career that I never really looked outside the box, so when this opportunity presented itself and I was able to climb into a truck, it was like a light switch, like this is what I’m supposed to be doing,” she said.

“I absolutely love this. I have to do this. I get to travel the world doing what I love. “Obviously, being in a roll cage is wonderful. My body thanks me for that, but I’ve driven big trucks my whole life,” said Mahon, who drives a custom-made lifted Ford F250 7.3 liter diesel truck she built with her dad. (When she’s back home in Dalton City, Illinois, she drives the truck to her other line of work — as the owner of a beauty salon.) Making the leap to monster trucks wasn’t just a shift in size, she says, but also a shift in approach; Monster Jam is a personality-driven affair, in which drivers are encouraged to make a connection with their audience inside and out of their trucks — as well as on social media, which helps drive up her following.
