I'm new to roasting, and have bought an Ambex YM-2 circa 2007 with a manual dial gas control knob. I bought it off someone who had it hard lined into house propane. I added a ball valve, 5' hose, 2 stage reg set at 11' wc, and a 20# tank.

I am getting a consistent pulse of the flame and gauge. It is not erratic, and pulses about every second. If I turn down to 3-6' wc, it is more pronounced and the flame gets yellow tips. At 2' wc, the flame is all yellow. I also can't get it up above 10'wc, which wasn't enough for a 4# batch. Also, has Ambex and Roaster Roaster Authority both gone out of business? I can't find any contact info online.

I'd love to convert to NG but need the parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Not home at the moment, but this is the 3rd regulator I've tried. The reg says tested at 11' wc. I've tried adjusting and don't see any change. The vent is clear, and the manometer is after the maxitrol solenoid (so it only reads pressure on ignition).

It seems the problem was worse with a single stage low pressure reg, but the pressure was higher (which I need for full charges). The ball valve is 1/2 psig so that's 13.5' wc. If I control the gas from there there is little or no pulsing. I can hear the pulsing at the reg on the tank, as well as at the flame itself. The reg is a Worthington 2 stage if that helps. Yes, Ambex is out of business.

For the parts you need and professional advice I recommend contacting Don Vining of Roaster Authority 727-804-8967 I believe you have the last version of the YM2 since you state it has the Maxitrol digital control valve. I suspect your regulators are ok, and I am not sure about this pulsing issue, possibly the digital valve has a problem as I have never had that problem. Have you seen this topic? Is your roaster identical looking to the one pictured?

I agree totally with Clint and although I only use my for home roasting he runs his roasting business with his. Much too much air around the burners. Taking Clints lead I blocked off the last letter cut in the side panels of the burners. I also sealed off all the opening into the lower compartment below the burners. I roast only 2 or 3 lb batches. I agree with Clint anything over 3.5 lbs is overloading the drum for good profile control.

My max WC is 9 with the knob fully turned, I never need more than 7 for a 3 lb roast. I've been roasting with my Ambex since 2009. All the important details are the same as the last iteration of YM2, inside the panel is all correct for the gas control, different distribution manifold for the burners as mine is just pipe. As you noted the charge handle and drop chute are early design. Pretty much an early transition, the ones I have seen previous to yours when they did not have the Maxitrol control just had perforated panels where ours have the 'Ambex' lettering cut out of solid stainless sheet. I could not view your video so I'm not sure about the pulsing, mine has even flow at all times though. Funny thing too is I just grabbed the first propane regulator I had found off an old barbecue and have used it ever since with no issues.

No, mine has never gone above 9 WC. I've never needed more burner than I have now. You could contact Clint about his, we are consecutive serial numbers between our roasters. Terry Davis was president of Ambex and of the Roasters Guild when these two roasters were built and they were manufactured for the competition at the Roasters Guild Retreat in Oregon in 2009. The reg is a Worthington 2 stage if that helps. I agree - likely your modulator having issues. Maxitrol 420HR correct?

Sounds like it has no trouble staying full open though which is Im guessing how you're manually throttling at the ball valve. If you're having good results throttling pressure @ the inlet ball valve you could stick to that to buy you some time. Parker makes a really nice needle valve that works MUCH better than a ball valve for precise pressure control.

Remove the plastic cap on your Worthington reg & screw in the spring a little bit to turn up your delivery pressure. Digicel flipbook review. Those would be some easy fixes to bridge the gap for now.
